Our day began at 6:20 am, filled with enthusiasm and purpose as we embarked on the Boksburg Community Project Park Clean-Up initiative. The plan was to cover a 5 km round trip around our beloved Atlasvlei. Despite the chilly morning air, we wasted no time in setting up our new branded gazebo and boards, and to our delight, we were warmly greeted by The Grill Bus already preparing for the day ahead.
Soon after, the Spur Alaska team joined us, and together we swiftly arranged flags and gazebos at the first kiddies area, which was in desperate need of a fresh coat of paint and some much-needed TLC. We raced back to the corner of Mercury and Finch to meet Gina from Indigo Wellness and Andre from Tazzman & Co, who fearlessly took on the task of cleaning and painting the island intersection while the Atlasville park run kicked off at 8 am.
Moving on to the second kiddies area, we initiated the Ceramic Pro paint project, diligently cleaning and repainting the kids’ equipment and nearby dustbins. By this time, it was 9 am, and we were joined by a wonderful mix of eager volunteers, including the Mickey Mouse kids, residents, and volunteers from Giant Panelbeaters, all ready for a major litter pick-up challenge. The kids were encouraged to form teams and compete for a cash prize, and their determination was inspiring. Local residents Rochelle, Alf, and Bryan played a crucial role by collecting bags and disposing of the trash at the local dump.
Throughout the day, we were delighted to have Janie from Boksburg Advertiser capturing the events, conducting interviews, and spreading positive vibes with her lovely conversations. Llewellyn Collins and his family were true heroes, bringing a huge trailer to remove the remnants of an illegally cut-down tree from the previous week. They not only emptied bins but also contributed to the overall cleanup effort.
In addition to that, a few Afriforum members dedicated themselves to cleaning up a section of overgrown paths at the kiddies area opposite Rebel foods, while Alf and Bryan, two local residents, took on the bridge painting at Rebel, ensuring no corner was overlooked.
Roger, a local gardener sponsored by our resident Karen from Cockatoo Street, made significant progress in cleaning the Spur kids area paths, weeding, and tidying up the edges. The result was a clean and inviting space that delighted the children who used to play in an area that once appeared neglected.
Elsewhere, Indigo Wellness and yoga e Yby Debbie focused on painting the peeling railings at the Mercury Vlei Bridge, while student volunteer Lereko, along with Di Tromp and Tracy Boggis, diligently cleaned up the vlei, unearthing an astonishing amount of waste.
As the day neared its end, the kids were thrilled to receive amazing surprise goodie bags from Spur Alaska, a wonderful gesture that brought smiles all around. The painting crew then moved on to our second bridge, completing repairs and painting, before concluding the day at 4 pm.
By 5 pm, we had gathered a sense of immense achievement, having tirelessly swept through our tasks, leaving a transformed and revitalized community in our wake. It was a powerful testament to what a united community can achieve when they come together with a shared vision of uplifting the place they call home.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed, and special thanks to our esteemed sponsors, Tazzman & Co, Giant Panelbeaters, Indigo Wellness, Yoga with Debbie, Spur Alaska, Spar Atlasville, Afriforum, Ceramic Pro, Efficient Metal Traders, and Brand Expert, whose support made this endeavor possible.
Stay tuned for our next exciting project, as we continue to work together towards a better, brighter future for our beloved community.
